Tonight, Greg & I watched the new show V, which stands for the Visitors. Beings from another planet came to Earth, claiming to be able to provide useful resources and technology as they came in peace. Of course there was a catch. The Visitors had already been living amongst humans and revealing themselves was the last component of their scheme.
What I found interesting was the debate amongst the clergy about how to teach and preach God in the midst of an alien invasion. One man, frustrated by the influx in the congregation after the Visitors arrival, felt that their presence would lead to a worshipping of these beings as they brought technological advances and great excitement amongst the people. The older of the two men said that he thanked God when the Visitors arrived. He said the congregation had not been packed like this in such a long time, and that the Visitors arrival was a chance to bring a vast number of people into relationship with God.
This concept stuck in my mind as the Vote in favor of building four casinos in Ohio was passed on election day. After listening to several discussions amongst church folk and then to those coversations at work amongst some people who have no desire to know who God is, I realized that we wasted our time. We were trying to convince those who care nothing about salvation and eternal consequences that bringing casinos to our state is a bad idea.
Now, what's done is done. We must not waste our time focusing on all of the ungodly things that can happen because the casinos are coming to town. We need to focus on the opportunity planted before us to pray for, role model, and introduce people to a sustainable relationship with God. The potential Vices & Vulgarity should bring us closer to God, as we are equipped to spread the good news and should not be distracted by this Vote for
The Visitors.
